Homeland Security warns to disable Java amid zero-day flaw
Summary: The U.S. Department of
Homeland Security is the latest body to warn users to disable Java
software amid escalating concerns over a serious, exploitable
vulnerability.
Hackers have discovered a weakness in Java 7 security that could allow the installation of malicious software and malware on machines that could increase the chance of identity theft, or the unauthorized participation in a botnet that could bring down networks or be used to carry out denial-of-service attacks against Web sites.
"We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," said the DHS' Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) in a post on its Web site on Thursday evening. "This vulnerability is being attacked in the wild, and is reported to be incorporated into exploit kits. Exploit code for this vulnerability is also publicly available."

Fear not though, I hear Carrie & Saul are on the case, and it should be cleared up in time for the weekend..
2. Don't Make Quentin Angry
... you wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Quentin Tarantino shuts down interviewer over questioning about violence
Quentin Tarantino's latest film "Django Unchained," nominated Thursday for three Oscars, bears the director's trademark: it is rife with violence. In an interview to promote the film, Krishnan Guru-Murthy of Britain's Channel 4 News attempts to ask Tarantino about what link there might be between violence in films and the proliferation of real-life violence -- and Tarantino wasn't having it."Why are you so sure that there's no link between enjoying movie violence and enjoying real violence?" Guru-Murthy asked Tarantino.
"Don't ask me a question like that -- I'm not biting," Tarantino responded. "I refuse your question."
"Why?"
"Because I refuse your question," Tarantino repeated. "I'm not your slave and you're not my master. You can't make me dance to your tune. I'm not a monkey."
Things get good around the 4:30 mark
"I'm here to sell my movie. This is a commercial for my movie, make no mistake."
Hahaha.. at least he's honest.

Kerry Skarbakka's Photographs Explore Fear Of Falling With 'The Struggle To Right Oneself' (PHOTOS)
Posted: 01/11/2013 8:32 am EST | Updated: 01/11/2013 11:14 am EST
If you've ever fallen off your bike, slipped in the shower or tripped on the steps you've experienced that brief moment of flying before you hit the ground. This frightening and powerless state is the subject of photographer Kerry Skarbakka 's series "The Struggle To Right Oneself."
Inspired by the death of his mother and the events of September 11, Skarbakka began the project as means to deal with his "emotional pain and existential insecurity," the artist said in an e-mail to The Huffington Post.
Skarbakka didn't just devote his mind to the ongoing project but his body as well. He describes the physically demanding process on his website:

Boston’s Best Bars For A Break-Up
January 11, 2013 6:05 AM
The holidays are winding down and a lot of the love that was in the air
has apparently been frozen out by January’s bitter chill. To make
matters worse, according to one website we found and didn’t bother to
fact-check when we googled “January Break-Up Month,” January is National
Break-Up Month. (Others said otherwise, but that doesn’t fit into our
narrative now, does it?)
If you are one of the masses planning to call it quits and start
fresh, this list of ‘Best Bars for a Break-Up’ is just for you (unless,
of course, you’d rather do it in private or by text message, or by
Twitter, or by… well, we’ll save Facebook for later).

An Tain is a dive – dark, drafty, and dumpy. It sets the mood perfectly. Also, two words: dollar drafts. Whether it’s financially or emotionally, you’ve probably invested a lot into this relationship. And quite frankly, you don’t feel like dropping another dime on it. But, since it’s customary to foot the bill if you’re doing the dumping, you might as well keep it cheap.

6. Take A Bite Out of the HOF
Nice read on Fred McGriff for all you baseball haters out there.. I guess in retrospect maybe he should get in. If for no other reason than he has one of the best baseball nicknames of all time (The Crime Dog)
Quirks of the Game: The Case for Fred McGriff
By STUART MILLERMcGriff earned a mere 20.7 percent of the vote this year and has never gotten more than 23.9 percent in four tries. How could that be for someone who finished with 493 homers, the same number as Lou Gehrig? If you take out the seven widely-suspected or confirmed performance-enhancing drug users ahead of him on the list (Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield), McGriff is in the top 20 of all time.
And of course... while we're here:
Ironically, whoever made this video was clearly on a week-long acid trip at the time.

Boston’s Best Craft Beer Festivals
January 11, 2013 6:15 AM
If you aren’t yet familiar with the growing craft beer culture in
Boston, it’s time to get on board. What once upon a time was thought of
as “underground” has become borderline mainstream around these parts.
And what better way to expand your palate than at a beer festival. For
those who have already ingrained themselves in the craft beer scene, you
know that beer festivals are an opportunity to celebrate the culture.
Whether you’re a novice or a connoisseur, Boston hosts a bunch of craft beer fests throughout the year. Here is a handful that are worth checking out.

Drink Craft Beer’s festivals aims to please a wide audience (beer aficionados and novices alike) while focusing exclusively on suds from New England breweries. As if you need a reason to check out Springfest, it happens to feature just about every brewery that made our list of Great Local Beers You May Not Have Heard Of (Yet). In all, Drink Craft Beer rounds up 25 of the best local breweries around and features 70+ of those breweries’ beers. For Springfest 2013, the focus is on celebrating hops. The Friday night session (cleverly dubbed “Hoppy Hour”) features an additional 25+ “super limited” beers that are made specially for the festival. Additionally, organizers tell us that in upcoming days, they plan to announce the secret details on an official fest beer, which is currently being brewed by Jack’s Abbey in Framingham. Drink Craft Beer prides itself on keeping the festival crowds small, which probably goes a long way in preventing spills. Of note, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and other local food vendors will be on hand for Springfest, so bring a little cash.

10. You Can Hear Jimi...
Yes, more unreleased hendrix tracks unearthed.. coming out in March. Here's a sneak peak.. iz nice.
January 8, 2013 8:00 AM
On March 5th, 12 previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix recordings from 1968 and 1969 will be available as People, Hell and Angels. The legendary guitarist was experimenting with new sounds and musical directions for First Rays of the New Rising Sun, the planned double-album follow-up to Electric Ladyland,
and on "Somewhere," Hendrix sits down with Buddy Miles on drums and
Stephen Stills on bass for a far-reaching psychedelic blues jam.
Recorded in 1968, "Somewhere" rides signature Hendrix wails, long
exploratory solos and free-flowing wordplay. Rolling Stone's Greatest Guitarist of All Time
shows why he's earned that title with unparalleled skill and eternally
innovative sounds, but "Somewhere" suggests his most complex work may
have only been ahead of him.
11. Trey Takes NPR
And of course.. he brings his bike out..
Philadelphia NPR affiliate WXPN just aired an acoustic performance and interview with Trey Anastasio on its World CafĂ© program. While the conversation focused on his new album Traveler, it also explored his recovery from addiction, his work on the musical Hands on a Hardbody and also a bit about Phish. Anastasio performed “Architect,” “Let Me Lie” and “Backwards Down The Number Line” on his acoustic. Then he explained that he was reluctant to perform solo gigs but eventually was won over in part because “the Phish audience is just so cool” and “people started spontaneously singing these crossing lines” on song such as “Limb By Limb.” The full interview can be heard here.
Anastasio kicks off a brief tour with his solo band on January 18 in Toronto.
