Lots of nice pieces out there about Dave Brubeck today..
AV club's obit has lots of cool vids
Hidden Track has got a cool Time Mag cover and some tweets of praise (tho he kinda looks like Jeff Goldblum there, doesn't he?)
The Onion even got in on the fun with a brief on "Jazz" itself (tho perhaps the best thing ever said about Jazz was on last week's The Office "Cmon, just play the RIGHT notes!)
And all that is fine and dandy but I think perhaps the best tribute to Mr. Brubeck comes from an unlikely source...
2. The Katt is out of the Bag
As mentioned last week, comedian Katt Williams has officially started to "lose his shit"
Here's a handy timeline of it all to help you keep track.
- November 25, continued: Immediately following his police chase, Williams enters a Target store where, after briefly arguing with one of the employees, he slaps him in the face. Williams then makes his escape from the store on an electric cart. There is, of course, video.
Side note: his manager is Suge Knight.. so I guess, you can't really be surprised by any of this.
3. Worries for another day
Fraggle Rock finally getting the respect it deserves.. I was a huge fan
4. Dr. Perk
Nice to see old friend Kendrick Perkins (or as I used to call him "the perkolata") setting up a career after basketball.. as his skills (on the court) are in decline. Apparently he has a nice future as a social worker ahead or at the very least a suicide hotline operator..
NEW YORK – For Kendrick Perkins,
the telephone calls from frustrated Oklahoma City Thunder teammates
come with a far greater frequency than passes into the post. Sometimes,
this is the blessing and the curse of playing with the greatness of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
In victory and defeat, the ball belongs to the NBA's two best
20-something scorers and everyone else is left to sort through the
scraps of shots.
"I get phone calls at all hours of the night from different teammates,"
Perkins told Yahoo! Sports. "And I've got to tell them: OK, you didn't
get yours tonight but…
Man, I hate when I dont get mine at night... I need Perk's number
5. Odd Couple
When Jim Harbaugh met Screech.. whoa.
6. Speaking of Odd Couples
This is perhaps the best "viral video" of the year.. sorry Psy.
7. Embrace Your Inner Nucky
With this speakeasy tour of Boston. We've been to that "Saloon" in Somerville. Very cool. I hate a wheat grass / bourbon concoction.. and I didnt even die or crap my pants. It was great!
8. A Christmas (Murder) Story
From our 1800's Murder Correspondent..
Interesting read on the history of the tune "Stagger Lee"
If you are unfamiliar, all you need to know is..
"There have been well over 200 versions of Stack's story released on record since then, giving him a list of biographers which includes some of the biggest names in popular music. Duke Ellington, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and James Brown have all recorded the song at one time or another, as have Wilson Pickett, The Clash, Bob Dylan, Dr John and Nick Cave. Even Elvis Presley had a stab at it in a 1970 rehearsal session which later surfaced as a bootleg CD"
I particularly like the Taj Mahal version...
But of course, the best has to be the Dead "unofficial" "sequel".. as only Garcia/Hunter can:
9. Speaking of Christmas Music
Just when you forgot how creepy John Travolta is.. THIS HAPPENED.
10. No News = Faux News
Hey, a deadline is a deadlin, yknow what I mean...
Cape Cod Times says reporter fabricated sources in dozens of stories
Cape Cod Times / Merrily Cassidy
Karen Jeffrey fabricated people in some of her stories, the Cape Cod Times says.
The Cape Cod Times said Karen Jeffrey, 59, a writer for the Times since 1981, “admitted to fabricating people in some of these articles and giving some others false names.”
In a column published Tuesday titled “An apology to our readers,” Publisher Peter Meyer and Editor Paul Pronovost wrote:
11. Mmmm. memes.
FOD does TWD.. brought to you by TDS. (and yes, I didnt know what a meme was until about a week ago when I had to google it. Im old)
12. Strange Sensation
You'd think the creators of homeland teaming up with Ned Stark would get me excited.. but somehow, not feeling much about this news.. perhaps its because the premise sounds so extremely lame.
13. This news however...
.. gets me a lil warm and fuzzy inside.. Though I have to admit.. after re-watching Dark Knight Rises last night... wow.. sure it has some good moments, but that fucker is way too long. It was close to 3 hrs. Could have easily been done in about 1:45. 1st edit: Cut every Alfred monologue in half... That being said, Hathaway did look good in that costume, but not as good as her. Maybe we can do a catwoman/charlie's angels type hyrbird and get them, and even Michelle Pfeiffer together! That would sell tickets!
14. Nerd Alert
Man, I get it. Walking Dead is awesome. I love the walking dead...Okay? I love it... but not as much as I love... .
15. Dedicated to his craft
Or just hooked on drugs.. either way.. pretty cool
Artist Takes Every Drug Known to Man, Draws Self Portraits After Each Use
This is all kinds of cool, and everything your mother told you not to do. Bryan Lewis Saunders is an artist from Washington D.C., not just any artist though. Saunders prefers to take a more unconventional approach to his artwork.
Arguably his most interesting project, entitled DRUGS is described as follows:
“After experiencing drastic changes in my environment, I looked for other experiences that might profoundly affect my perception of the self. So I devised another experiment where everyday I took a different drug and drew myself under the influence. Within weeks I became lethargic and suffered mild brain damage. I am still conducting this experiment but over greater lapses of time. I only take drugs that are given to me.”
1st-- Dave, didn't know you were an artist!
2nd-- this guy is out of his gourd.. check out that link for the full collection but if that one above doesn't explain it.. perhaps this will:
