Homeland Security warns to disable Java amid zero-day flaw

Summary: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is the latest body to warn users to disable Java software amid escalating concerns over a serious, exploitable vulnerability.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has warned users to disable or uninstall Java software on their computers, amid continuing fears and an escalation in warnings from security experts that hundreds of millions of business and consumer users are vulnerable to a serious flaw.

Hackers have discovered a weakness in Java 7 security that could allow the installation of malicious software and malware on machines that could increase the chance of identity theft, or the unauthorized participation in a botnet that could bring down networks or be used to carry out denial-of-service attacks against Web sites.
"We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," said the DHS' Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) in a post on its Web site on Thursday evening. "This vulnerability is being attacked in the wild, and is reported to be incorporated into exploit kits. Exploit code for this vulnerability is also publicly available."

Fear not though, I hear Carrie & Saul are on the case, and it should be cleared up in time for the weekend..

2. Don't Make Quentin Angry

... you wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Quentin Tarantino shuts down interviewer over questioning about violence

Quentin Tarantino's latest film "Django Unchained," nominated Thursday for three Oscars, bears the director's trademark: it is rife with violence. In an interview to promote the film, Krishnan Guru-Murthy of Britain's Channel 4 News attempts to ask Tarantino about what link there might be between violence in films and the proliferation of real-life violence -- and Tarantino wasn't having it.
"Why are you so sure that there's no link between enjoying movie violence and enjoying real violence?" Guru-Murthy asked Tarantino.
"Don't ask me a question like that -- I'm not biting," Tarantino responded. "I refuse your question."
"Why?"
"Because I refuse your question," Tarantino repeated. "I'm not your slave and you're not my master. You can't make me dance to your tune. I'm not a monkey."

Things get good around the 4:30 mark

Best line?
"I'm here to sell my movie. This is a commercial for my movie, make no mistake."

Hahaha.. at least he's honest.

Kerry Skarbakka's Photographs Explore Fear Of Falling With 'The Struggle To Right Oneself' (PHOTOS)

Posted: | Updated: 01/11/2013 11:14 am EST

If you've ever fallen off your bike, slipped in the shower or tripped on the steps you've experienced that brief moment of flying before you hit the ground. This frightening and powerless state is the subject of photographer Kerry Skarbakka 's series "The Struggle To Right Oneself."
kerry skarbakka
Inspired by the death of his mother and the events of September 11, Skarbakka began the project as means to deal with his "emotional pain and existential insecurity," the artist said in an e-mail to The Huffington Post.
Skarbakka didn't just devote his mind to the ongoing project but his body as well. He describes the physically demanding process on his website:
"Using myself as model and with the aid of climbing gear and other rigging, I photograph the body as it dangles from dangerous precipices or tumbles down flights of stairs."

Follow the link for more of his pics.. some of them are just plain insane.. like this one:

5. Breakin' Up Is Hard To Do

So why not do it at one of these fine establishments... at least you can get drunt after..

Boston’s Best Bars For A Break-Up

January 11, 2013 6:05 AM
The holidays are winding down and a lot of the love that was in the air has apparently been frozen out by January’s bitter chill. To make matters worse, according to one website we found and didn’t bother to fact-check when we googled “January Break-Up Month,” January is National Break-Up Month. (Others said otherwise, but that doesn’t fit into our narrative now, does it?) If you are one of the masses planning to call it quits and start fresh, this list of ‘Best Bars for a Break-Up’ is just for you (unless, of course, you’d rather do it in private or by text message, or by Twitter, or by… well, we’ll save Facebook for later).

Bostons Best Bars For A Break Up

An Tain is a dive – dark, drafty, and dumpy. It sets the mood perfectly. Also, two words: dollar drafts. Whether it’s financially or emotionally, you’ve probably invested a lot into this relationship. And quite frankly, you don’t feel like dropping another dime on it. But, since it’s customary to foot the bill if you’re doing the dumping, you might as well keep it cheap.

6. Take A Bite Out of the HOF

Nice read on Fred McGriff for all you baseball haters out there.. I guess in retrospect maybe he should get in. If for no other reason than he has one of the best baseball nicknames of all time (The Crime Dog)

Quirks of the Game: The Case for Fred McGriff

Fred McGriff with the Devil Rays during a spring training game in 1998.
Fred McGriff with the Devil Rays during a spring training game in 1998.
Buried far down the list of Hall of Fame vote-getters released Wednesday is one who didn’t capture any headlines for his lack of votes. That’s only fitting because during his career, his achievements were increasingly buried beneath headlines touting big-name players with big muscles. When it comes to the Hall of Fame, Fred McGriff is perhaps the quintessential victim of the way the game was corrupted by the players, players union, owners and the commissioner.
McGriff earned a mere 20.7 percent of the vote this year and has never gotten more than 23.9 percent in four tries. How could that be for someone who finished with 493 homers, the same number as Lou Gehrig? If you take out the seven widely-suspected or confirmed performance-enhancing drug users ahead of him on the list (Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield), McGriff is in the top 20 of all time.

And of course... while we're here:

Ironically, whoever made this video was clearly on a week-long acid trip at the time.

7. Save the Date(s)

Hooray Beer!

Boston’s Best Craft Beer Festivals

January 11, 2013 6:15 AM
If you aren’t yet familiar with the growing craft beer culture in Boston, it’s time to get on board. What once upon a time was thought of as “underground” has become borderline mainstream around these parts. And what better way to expand your palate than at a beer festival. For those who have already ingrained themselves in the craft beer scene, you know that beer festivals are an opportunity to celebrate the culture.
Whether you’re a novice or a connoisseur, Boston hosts a bunch of craft beer fests throughout the year. Here is a handful that are worth checking out.

First up!!

Drink Craft Beer Springfest

Space 57
200 Stuart Street
Boston
Dates: April 5-6
Tickets: $50-$60
drinkcraftbeer.com
Drink Craft Beer’s festivals aims to please a wide audience (beer aficionados and novices alike) while focusing exclusively on suds from New England breweries. As if you need a reason to check out Springfest, it happens to feature just about every brewery that made our list of Great Local Beers You May Not Have Heard Of (Yet). In all, Drink Craft Beer rounds up 25 of the best local breweries around and features 70+ of those breweries’ beers. For Springfest 2013, the focus is on celebrating hops. The Friday night session (cleverly dubbed “Hoppy Hour”) features an additional 25+ “super limited” beers that are made specially for the festival. Additionally, organizers tell us that in upcoming days, they plan to announce the secret details on an official fest beer, which is currently being brewed by Jack’s Abbey in Framingham. Drink Craft Beer prides itself on keeping the festival crowds small, which probably goes a long way in preventing spills. Of note, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and other local food vendors will be on hand for Springfest, so bring a little cash.

8. Shoot it, fatboy!

Now this is a highlight!

Of course the best part of it is that it brings back fond memories of this

9. Nature finds a way

Apparently, this stupid cadet's never heard of the food chain..

10. You Can Hear Jimi...

Yes, more unreleased hendrix tracks unearthed.. coming out in March. Here's a sneak peak.. iz nice.

On March 5th, 12 previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix recordings from 1968 and 1969 will be available as People, Hell and Angels. The legendary guitarist was experimenting with new sounds and musical directions for First Rays of the New Rising Sun, the planned double-album follow-up to Electric Ladyland, and on "Somewhere," Hendrix sits down with Buddy Miles on drums and Stephen Stills on bass for a far-reaching psychedelic blues jam. Recorded in 1968, "Somewhere" rides signature Hendrix wails, long exploratory solos and free-flowing wordplay. Rolling Stone's Greatest Guitarist of All Time shows why he's earned that title with unparalleled skill and eternally innovative sounds, but "Somewhere" suggests his most complex work may have only been ahead of him.

11. Trey Takes NPR

And of course.. he brings his bike out..

Philadelphia NPR affiliate WXPN just aired an acoustic performance and interview with Trey Anastasio on its World Café program. While the conversation focused on his new album Traveler, it also explored his recovery from addiction, his work on the musical Hands on a Hardbody and also a bit about Phish. Anastasio performed “Architect,” “Let Me Lie” and “Backwards Down The Number Line” on his acoustic. Then he explained that he was reluctant to perform solo gigs but eventually was won over in part because “the Phish audience is just so cool” and “people started spontaneously singing these crossing lines” on song such as “Limb By Limb.” The full interview can be heard here.
Anastasio kicks off a brief tour with his solo band on January 18 in Toronto.

12. Full Show Friday

You know it's going to be a good day when full show Friday is this gem:

Full Show Friday: Jerry Garcia Band with Bruce Hornsby

Written by on 01.11.2013 | Full Show Friday, Jerry, Jerry Garcia, Videos

Happy Friday everybody. Congrats on making it through a tough work week, but now it’s time to relax, kick your feet up and enjoy a long holiday weekend. For this week’s Full Show Friday selection we’ve got one of the most highly-regarded Jerry Garcia Band shows of all-time. When the JGB played the Hampton Coliseum on November 9, 1991 they were joined by none other than Bruce Hornsby.
Jer always seemed to get a huge kick out of jamming with Hornsby as Bruce always challenged and pushed Garcia. That was true on this night as the JGB and Hornsby tear through a setlist that featured some of the best songs in the band’s repertoire including Run For The Roses, Don’t Let Go, Midnight Moonlight and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. YouTuber LoloYodel has combined two separate fan-shot camera angles with a soundboard soundtrack making for a superb set of videos.

Have a very Jerry weekend, y'all! Just try to lay off the donuts...

Thirst-quenching Thursday

1. Cheery-ho gate

The saga continues... as Doc rivers (predictably) defends KG.. we're seeing some more grainy cell phone vid of the alleged incident. (scroll down)

Meantime.. friends of La La say she is standing by her man.. even if she's not living with him and is spending her New Years Eve on South Beach "by herself"... hm... I'm sure there was plenty of tastings going on that night...

"After Melo was set off by the Celtics’ Kevin Garnett for allegedly saying La La “tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios,” speculation over infidelity flew. But sources insist that’s not the root of the couple’s split. “I have not heard anything about him having another woman,” said one pal, adding, “La La has never slept with Garnett.”

Hm.. then how does he know what she tastes like?

Side note: The more I think about it, I think La La is a great name..

Also while we are here, let's reminisce about the toughness of a young, Melo:

2. So Much For Trying to Help People

Poor guy was just trying to instruct others about one of his areas of expertise... and this is how he's repaid? Whatever happened to Grow Free or Die? Cmon, NH. You're better than that.

AUBURN, N.H. (CBS) – A 40-year-old Auburn, New Hampshire man is accused of growing marijuana in his home.
Kyle Berry allegedly made 35 videos of his grow operation and published them on YouTube.
A tipster told authorities about the videos and investigators raided Berry’s apartment this week.
They found 16 marijuana plants and about one pound of loose marijuana.

 ----------

Sure, he gets busted.. but Bieber posts all those youtube videos and become an international superstar? Something is wrong with the internet age we live in.

Side note: perhaps he needed a better guard "dog"

3. Drive-Thru Prank

Pretty good. If there's one thing that never gets old.. it's videos of people who are scared shitless by stupid things.

4. Pinning!

Sure, Sammy Sosa may never make it to the hall of fame.. but that doesnt mean he's not a winner. And he's got the pinterest page to prove it.

Sammy Sosa Has The Best Pinterest Page Ever

I can't even. This is amazing. Sammy Sosa is making an effort to get his name back out there, and that includes joining social media. He set up a Twitter account in October (it's confirmed as him), and a few weeks ago joined photo sharing site/social network for middle-aged women Pinterest. So forget whatever you're doing; go look at his Pinterest page.

5. You're a Weird Guy, Dan

Words cant' really do this one justice.. so I'll just let it speak for itself

Here’s An Old Photo Of Dan Marino Doing Yoga With Some Really Hairy Guy Who’s Only Wearing A Speedo

Just check out that zen-like concentration on Dan's face. That's why he's one of the all-time greats. Side note: I bet it smelled great in there! Like a BBQ joint after a day-long brisket smoking session.

6. You So Crazy

You may have heard Beyonce was named the sexiest woman of the century by GQ... and they have the photos to prove it...

Hopefully this helps erase that above pic from your memory.. I apologize if not

But what you wouldn't know unless you actually opened the magazine (if you can pry it open) is that she may very well be the craziest woman of the century too! (Funny how often those two qualities are linked, isn't it?

GQ Interview Confirms That Beyoncé Is Fucking Crazy and Exactly As You Imagine Her

"How can so much fucking crazy be contained within a two-page interview?"

This is the question that will surely be asked by all readers of GQ's insane new Beyoncé interview, "Miss Millennium: Beyoncé," which you must read immediately so that you can spend the day reflecting on it...

You want proof?

In her "sleek office suite in midtown Manhattan," Beyoncé maintains a Beyoncé-themed competitor to the Library of Congress. "The official Beyoncé archive, a temperature-controlled digital-storage facility" contains, in addition to video of every show she's ever performed, every interview she's ever recorded, and "thousands of hours of private footage," "virtually every existing photograph of her, starting with the very first frames taken of Destiny's Child."
Since 2005, Beyoncé has employed a "visual director" who has shot "practically her every waking moment," for up to 16 hours a day. Imagine the super cuts that could be made from this footage: a solid forty minutes of Beyoncé flicking off light switches in Germany. An hour of Jay-Z saying "carrot."
Before making love to her husband Jay-Z, Beyoncé advises herself to listen to "Make Love to Me," probably because she works best in the literal.
She's also just straight-up fucking crazy:
"I now know that, yes, I am powerful," she says. "I'm more powerful than my mind can even digest and understand."

7. Father of the Year

It must be because he has so many women calling him "Daddy"...

Bill Clinton Named 'Father Of The Year' By National Father's Day Council

Posted: | Updated: 01/10/2013 11:43 am EST

Former President Bill Clinton will be honored as a "father of the year" by the The National Father’s Day Council this coming June, the Council announced Wednesday.
In a press release highlighting Clinton's philanthropy through the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative -- and as the U.N. Special Envoy for Haiti -- National Father’s Day Committee chairman Dan Orwig commended the politician and philanthropist for his "profound generosity, leadership and tireless dedication to both his public office and many philanthropic organizations."

8. Need A Lift?

Here's 28 things to make you feel better about yourself.. courtesy of our friends over at Funny or Die.

These ones really hit home:

25. Stop “ironically” showing up at high school parties.

18. Grow a second, wispier goatee.

14. Go online and hurl anonymous, randomly homophobic insults at strangers discussing topics you don’t understand.

11. Puke and rally, bro.

4. Cocaine.

9. Move Over Tommy

There's a new announcing homer in town! And he's out of control!

10. Tips for Live Concert Tweeting

Some good pointers.. of course they forgot the most important one..

1. PUT YOUR GODDAMN PHONE DOWN AND WATCH THE SHOW!

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

You got a date Wednesday, baby!

1. Leftovers

Since I've been out of commission for a few days here's some leftovers from earlier in the week...

KG continues to perfect the art of trash-talking
Isn't tasting like Honey Nut Cheerios a good thing?

Of course he's from Portland (Oregon)
            Jah bless! Bwahahaha

Of course they're Japanese
            Five girls. One cup.

Heisenberg he's not
           You god-damned right.

You thought your last flight was bad?
Though I have to say, this pic looks fake/staged:

You thought that flight was bad...
Duct tape.. is there anything it can't do?

Finally, other drivers can see what I see when I drive home post-show
           From our post-show logistics correspodent...

Talk about a handful...
Sadly for him.. they're man boobs.

2. The Story That Keeps On Giving

By now, you've heard about this hullaballoo from the College Football National Championship game. Of course, since there's an attractive woman involved, this story isn't going anywhere. Here's today's latest:

ESPN apologizes for having creepy old man oogling her for all of 30 seconds during the game

Webb and her family say cut the poor old bastard some slack

Musburger says F-U all.. I called the Celtics-Lakers finals in the 80's when you were all sucking your thumbs!

3. Board room

As someone who's been getting into these so-called "european board games" lately (not sure why that's "so-called". Theyre actually from Europe. Just seemed fitting)

This is a great read... and let me just say Ive added a few new games to the list of ones we should try, gentlemen!

How board games sum up the meaning of life through colorful cards and painted pieces

Nerd Curious is an occasional series in which Todd VanDerWerff tries the nerdy things he missed as a kid, either due to lack of access, time, or ability. He has a rough schedule planned out, but feel free to use the comments to suggest more nerd experiences he needs to have.
No matter how many times my nephew tries, he can’t save the world.
One by one, cities fall to the dreaded blue plague sweeping across North America and Europe. Paris. Essen. Toronto. Chicago. Atlanta, his home base. He moves personnel in and out of these cities, cleaning up disease, but also hemmed in by it.
And then South America explodes, as does Africa—with a completely different disease. And he’s out of time, out of chances to develop a vaccine, and out of cards. So he reverses time. Puts the cards back in the deck, lets the disease take over Europe again. He tries his best to stop the second disease before it pops up, but this time, the blue one starts to bubble up before an entirely different plague seizes hold of Asia. Again, he reverses, to give the world another chance.
He’s playing a board game called Pandemic. My wife and I introduced him to it, and the three of us have yet to win a game.

3-A. And in other board game news..

Down with the thimble!

4.  Star Wars.. Shmar Wars

I thought my "sequel announcement excitement level" couldn't get any higher after the Star Wars news.. I was wrong. Dead wrong.

The Hebrew Hammer is returning to take on Hitler

Although it's very unlike the Jews to not just let go of the past, director Jonathan Kesselman and actor Adam Goldberg have spent the last 10 years attempting to mount a sequel to 2003's The Hebrew Hammer, their fluke cult hit about an overcoat-clad Jewish vigilante making the streets safe for everyone's bubbe. Now that sequel is finally set for a spring start date, thanks to a crowd-sourced fundraising campaign on Jewcer and the fact that Israel doesn't need any more money. (What, they want we should pay them not to call us?). As you can see from the promo below, the follow-up will find Goldberg's Mordechai time traveling to take on "the Jewish Joker": Adolf Hitler, the Jewish archvillain who had a way with a pun and an equally horrible way with genocide.

If you never saw the original, get yourself some latkes to nosh on and settle in:

5. Where are they now?

Weird Science Edition!

I know what you're wondering.. and you already know the answer. Yes, I own that on DVD. And yes, I will be watching it soon.

6. I got it from the toilet seat

Blame Canada!

"Incurable" gonorrhea hits North American shores

At least nine Canadian patients have contracted a strain of "incurable" gonorrhea, according to a study released on Jan. 7 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers found that nine of the 133 patients with gonorrhea who were treated at a Toronto clinic still had the disease after being treated with the oral antibiotic cephalosporins. This marks the first time that cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhea has been found on the continent.
"We've heard of such cases in Asia and Europe. Now it's happening in North America," Dr. Robert Kirkcaldy, medical epidemiologist in the Division of STD Prevention at CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said to NPR. "It's very concerning."

Luckily, FZ wrote a song about it... like to hear it? Here it go:

"this is the kind of thing that our songs are made out of"

7. Viral Videos

Not to be confused with the Venerial Video above..

That's cool!
That's stupid!
That's really stupid!

8. Lifting the Veil

On the wacky adventures of John Travolta and Tom Cruise in the Church of Scientology! Thanks Grantland!

The Nuttiest Tom Cruise and John Travolta Parts in Lawrence Wright's Scientology Exposé

By Amos Barshad on
Randi Lynn Beach/Getty
Back in February 2011, The New Yorker published Lawrence Wright's "The Apostate: Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology," one of the more expansive and informed explorations of the mysterious workings of the organization to date. But that was just the beginning. Wright, the first-ballot journalism Hall of Famer behind the masterful The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, has now expanded his research into Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief, a book that might just prove to be the defining account of L. Ron Hubbard's minions and all they have wrought.

My favorite part:

OK, on to Cruise, whose relationship with the church — more specifically, with Church top dog David Miscavige — is much more buddy-buddy.
Cruise ... fell under the spell of Miscavige's commanding personality. He modeled his determined naval-officer hero in 1992's A Few Good Men on Miscavige, a fact that the Church leader liked to brag about.
Meanwhile, Miscagive was busy making all of TC's dreams come true:
Miscavige heard about [Cruise and Kidman's] fantasy of running through a field of wildflowers together, so he had Sea Org members plant a section of the desert with them; when that failed to meet his expectations, the meadow was plowed and sodded with grass. When a flood triggered a mudslide that despoiled a romantic bungalow specially constructed for the couple, Miscavige held the entire base responsible and ordered everyone to work 16-hour days until everything was restored.

9. Hall of Shame

Not the biggest Jayon Stark Fan.. but nice write up on the fallout from today's Hall of Fame 0-fer.

The crux:
"So we need to have a long, serious national conversation, starting right now, about where those events fit into the contours of the Hall of Fame. I'm ready if you are.
Maybe we'll decide we want a Hall of Fame that renders all, or most, of that invisible. Maybe we'll decide we want a Hall of Fame that aspires to be a shrine, not just to greatness but to purity. I don't know how we get there, but maybe that's where this conversation will lead us.
But maybe we'll decide, once we think it all through, that's impossible. Maybe we'll recognize that what the Hall needs to be, in these complicated times, is a museum, and nothing more sainted or noble than that.
Maybe it needs to be a place that does what other great history museums do -- tell the story of a time in history, for better and for worse, wherever it leads. Maybe that's not exactly what we would hope and dream a Hall of Fame should be. Maybe, though, that's what it has to be, because if we try traveling down that other road, we'll find nothing but forks and detours and roadblocks."

I agree. Sadly it has come to this, but I think you just let em all in.. and you have just different wings. This is the steroid era wing. This is the deadball era. This is the whites-only wing... etc etc. You can't deny that a museum dedicated to baseball should have mentions of dudes like Clemens and Bonds.. even if they are in the Dirty Cheating Assholes Wing.

10. Note to Self

Avoid the T on Sunday.

11. Dropping Soon

Albums to look forward to in 2013...
New Beck coming out? Yes, please! In case you didn't hear about his most recent project, he's still pretty cool... even if he's hanging out with Cruise & Travolta.

Noticeably absent from the list... Johnny Depp's Pirate Album! Arrrrrrrr you kidding me?!? Here's a sneak peak anyway..

As perhaps you already know, Tom Waits and Keith Richards put their guitars together in 2012 to collaborate on a song to be featured on a pirate-themed compilation album put together by Johnny Depp (who gave life to the flamboyant swashbuckler Jack Sparrow) and his Pirates director, Gore Verbinski. The product of the Waits/Richards collaboration is a song called "Shenandoah," which is now streaming on NPR. The 36-track double album Son Of Rogue's Gallery, which also features songs by Shane MacGowan, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Michael Stipe and Courtney Love (together!), Iggy Pop, and many more, will be released on February 18. Can "Shenandoah" calm your anticipatory jitters until then?

12. Even convicts need their Daily Saw

From our "C'mon Meow" correspondant..

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A cat carrying a saw and a mobile phone was "detained" as it entered a prison gate in northeast Brazil, Brazilian media reported on Saturday.
Prison guards were surprised when they saw a white cat crossing the main gate of the prison, its body wrapped with tape. A closer look showed the feline also carried drills, an earphone, a memory card, batteries and a phone charger.
All 263 detainees in the prison of Arapiraca, a city of 215,000 people in the state of Alagoas, are considered suspect in the plot, which is being investigated by local police.

Of course, if I was behind bars.. not exactly the pussy i'd be trying to smuggle in.. but that's just me.

UB66

Happy Birthday you ol' Bastid

Here's the AV Club's Primer to get you into the world of Bowie.. if you dare..Warning: There's no turning back...

David Bowie

David Bowie

Primer is The A.V. Club's ongoing series of beginners' guides to pop culture's most notable subjects: filmmakers, music styles, literary genres, and whatever else interests us—and hopefully you.

David Bowie 101

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, rock music faced a severe vacuum. Hard rock, progressive rock, pop saviors, and singer-songwriters abounded, but with The Beatles’ demise in 1970, no artist was left to truly straddle the aisles and unify the increasingly fragmented music scene. Did David Bowie fill that vacuum, or exaggerate it? To this day, his challenging, enigmatic image and music make it hard to say. What’s clear, though, is that Bowie’s emergence in 1969 with the earth-shattering single “Space Oddity”—a song sandwiched ingeniously between the release of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Apollo 11 moon landing—marked him as a rock auteur not only of his time, but of the future.

http://www.avclub.com/articles/david-bowie,47556/

And what do you know.. the Stardusty one is celebrating in his own way.. with a new tune/video...

And of course, no David Bowie celebration would be complete without..

And maybe this is adding salt to his old-aged wounds.. but just for the hell of it...

Manic (Depression) Monday

1. God Bless America

Just when you thought the general population couldn't get any dumber.. or perhaps just when you thought all the talk about just how stupid people are was blown out of proportion.. this little gem pops online from the AP.

God save us, more like it...

Speaking of which, got a chance over the weekend to watch my first full episode of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo -- I had only watched clips online before. In this particular episode, the family goes to the Annual Red Neck Games... just let your imagination run wild with that one for a minute, then check out this video.. it's even worse than you might have thought.

2. Hey man, I've got a Beverage Here

What would happen if The Dude became a Buddhist? Fear not, it's actually happened and Jeff Bridges wrote about it. Here's a review...

‘The Dude and the Zen Master’

“The Dude and the Zen Master” is an incomplete and spotty guide to Zen philosophy, where sometimes the Dude-ism and the Buddhism mix in a helpful way.

The authors Jeff Bridges, left, and Bernie Glassman, who use Mr. Bridges’s film “The Big Lebowski” as a philosophical guide.
The authors Jeff Bridges, left, and Bernie Glassman, who use Mr. Bridges’s film “The Big Lebowski” as a philosophical guide.

Honestly, it sounds cool on paper, but the review kind of turned me off a little bit. I think the reporter's trying to be too cute. Is it ok to review a review? I'm sure the Zen Master would like that one.

3. All Jets Are Off

And in this week's edition of laughing past the Jets' graveyard...

Fed-up Jets fans are desperately trying to unload their personal seat licenses

It’s the only thing harder to get rid of than Mark Sanchez — a Jets personal seat license.
Fed-up season-ticket holders are desperately trying to unload their PSLs, setting up a potential mass exodus of Jets fans that could become an even bigger challenge for the team than finding a new general manager.
The selling of PSLs — pricey licenses for the right to buy season tickets — were used by both the Jets and Giants to help fund construction of the $1.6 billion, 82,500-seat MetLife Stadium they share that opened in 2010.
But while Giants fans’ PSLs have gone up in value — their team did just win a Super Bowl last season — Jets fans have seen their investments fall shorter than a Sanchez pass.

Two bad: “This whole PSL process was a rip-off,” says Kenny Scarabaggio (above), a season-ticket holder since 1983.
Two bad: “This whole PSL process was a rip-off,” says Kenny Scarabaggio (above), a season-ticket holder since 1983.

“My feeling is there’s going to be a lot of PSL owners who default,” said Bill Koy Jr., 41, a Morristown, NJ, lawyer whose family has owned season tickets since 1965, when the Jets first drafted Joe Namath.
“As a lawyer, I’m really curious to see if the Jets would really take their fans to court because of the public-relations hit they’d receive and the costs of such litigation,” added Koy, who is not looking to default on his six mid-level PSLs.

Could the Jets actually sue their fans?!?! God I hope so...

Meantime... if the Pats somehow lose to Houston this weekend.. will it all be Shaugnessy's fault?

Arian Foster Changes Twitter Photo To Dan Shaughnessy’s Column, Which Blasts Texans

BOSTON (CBS) — The term “bulletin board material” takes on a whole new meaning in the age of social networking.
Arian Foster apparently came across a column from Dan Shaughnessy of The Boston Globe, and the Texans’ star running back was entertained enough by it to change his profile photo to a screenshot of the column.
“The 2012-13 New England Patriots just became the first team in NFL history to get back-to-back byes before advancing to the conference championship game. Could this get any easier?” the column reads in Foster’s avatar. “I mean, seriously? The planets are aligned and the tomato cans are in place. The fraudulent Houston Texans are the only team standing between the New England Patriots and a trip to the AFC Championship game. All the Patriots have to do is beat the terrible Texans. One week from today. At Gillette Stadium.”

(Too much tweeting)

When you need to tell the world when you are coming.. clearly you have problems.

BEIJING–At noon on Monday, Brad Pitt joined China’s massive microblogging service Sina Weibo and issued a short missive as open to interpretation as his Chanel No. 5 ads.
“It is the truth. Yup, I’m coming…” Pitt posted in his verified account.

7. Feel Like I've Seen It Before

For all you snobs who think your fancy Downton Abby is all that... let the AV club show you how it's actually the same show as..... wait for it.. Entourage..

9. In Case You Missed It

While some of us were rockin out at MSG, others were home on couch tour, and were able to rip and post these awesome vids showing Trey & Mike explaining their rigs... see if you can match the quotes with the person who said it:

1) When I Hit this button I go off into la la land

2) I pretty much stole this from Phil Lesh

Coming soon to my rig.. that boogie on effect cactus uses. Maybe someday there will be a video of me online, explaining how I stole my sound from Cactus!

10. The Bad Old Days

This headline pretty much sums up my time at my last employer to a T...

Man Returns To Work After Vacation With Fresh, Reenergized Hatred For Job

News in BriefLocalISSUE 49•02Jan 7, 2013
EUGENE, OR—Arriving back at work after a two-week winter vacation, local marketing assistant Matthew Bueso told reporters Monday he was happy to return to the office with a fresh and rejuvenated loathing for his job. “It’s always nice to get away for a few weeks, clear my head, and come back invigorated with a newfound disgust for my place of employment and the various responsibilities of my thoroughly depressing job,” said Bueso, 38.

11. A Case of National Security!

1. Confusing Tweet of the Day

Maybe it's just the long weekend in NYC, but I can't seem to make heads or tails out of this one:

UPDATE: Early reports mistakenly saying Hillary Clinton was released from hospital have been confirmed to be untrue.

@NBCNews

Oh to be alive in this wonderful "information age!"

2. True Tweet of the Day

"Don't worry, yelling at players and coaches through your TV really does have an impact. It's science."
@espn

True story. It's science.

3. Speaking of Science...

As Jesse Pinkman would say... "Yay, Science!"

Study Suggests Lower Mortality Risk for People Deemed to Be Overweight

A century ago, Elsie Scheel was the perfect woman. So said a 1912 article in The New York Times about how Miss Scheel, 24, was chosen by the “medical examiner of the 400 ‘co-eds’ ” at Cornell University as a woman “whose very presence bespeaks perfect health.”

Miss Scheel, however, was hardly model-thin. At 5-foot-7 and 171 pounds, she would, by today’s medical standards, be clearly overweight. (Her body mass index was 27; 25 to 29.9 is overweight.)

But a new report suggests that Miss Scheel may have been onto something. The report on nearly three million people found that those whose B.M.I. ranked them as overweight had less risk of dying than people of normal weight. And while obese people had a greater mortality risk over all, those at the lowest obesity level (B.M.I. of 30 to 34.9) were not more likely to die than normal-weight people.

The report, although not the first to suggest this relationship between B.M.I. and mortality, is by far the largest and most carefully done, analyzing nearly 100 studies, experts said.

Of course, the downside of this is that these people are going to be around for far too long.

4. Racism? Yeah, there's an app for that

Although, there's probably more than one...

5. DVR Alert

As we enter the doldrums of the tv-viewing season, here's some shows to look forward courtesy of the Daily Beast...

One key mention left off: Californication. Returns on Jan 13th for what could be the last season. If you haven't seen it before, check it out on netflix.

6.  Celtics quote of the day

Ok, its from a few days ago but it was new to me:

"These are dog days. This is really where you really see who's with you. Ain't nobody cheering, ain't no lights on us and I love this right now. Because this is where all the plastic people melt right here."
-KG

7.  Lakers quote of the day

“Cause we’re old as shit. What do you want? We just got to figure out how to play when we don't have that energy... You just saw an old damn team."

8. Christie Quote of the Day

I have to admit, I kinda wish this guy was my Governor... the only problem is nailing down which is actually the best..

Let's put it to a vote:

1)  "I think, unfortunately, folks are putting politics ahead of their responsibilities. It's absolutely disgraceful... It's why the American people hate Congress."

2) "Last night politics was placed before our oaths to serve our citizens. For me it was disappointing and disgusting to watch. If the people of New Jersey feel betrayed today by those who did this in the House last night, then they have good company. I'm with them."

 3) "Fuck it, I'm going to White Castle."

Ok, I made one of those up.

9. C'mon, guys! She's a (soon-to-be) Mom!

Kim Kardashian Sex Tape Sales Skyrocket After Pregnancy Announcement

Kim Kardashian's unborn baby is already helping her cash in, but in a very unexpected way.
TMZ reports sales of the 32-year-old's sex tape, "Kim Kardashian Superstar," have skyrocketed since news broke that she and Kanye West are expecting their first child together.
Adult entertainment company Vivid Entertainment owns Kardashian's sex tape and told TMZ that video-on-demand purchases of the reality star's romp with then-boyfriend Ray J have spiked 80 percent since Sunday night .

In Other news, the pair promises their Satan Spawn will not be a reality star... hahahahhah. Right. I'm sure they're already figuring out a way to get the ultrasound cam to go live.

Let's just say Kanye has his work cut out for him...
